INTERNSHIPS AND ATTACHMENTS /

Jasmine Yu

Law Student, Murdoch University, Western Australia

I'm glad that I'm missing out on a whole month of uni to do this internship. It's really a shame that I have to leave soon because I know I've much more to learn from Thomas Philip.

The staff at Thomas Philip are not only highly experienced and competent at what they do; they are also welcoming, caring, helpful and patient. Mr. Matthew Philip has definitely put a great legal team together and established a very successful firm within such a short time.

The bulk of my internship was focused on a huge contractual case concerning the KL-KLIA Dedicated Highway. I was involved in researching, perusing huge bundles of documents, drafting a witness statement and was even given the chance to see the case being heard. I wish I could be around longer to see the outcome unfold. (I'm certain we will win!)

I was also given research tasks for cases in other areas of law; including negligence, equity, family law and civil procedure. Research used to be a chore for me, but I now find it quite enjoyable (especially when I stumble across something new and interesting). I wish I had the time to be more involved in those other cases.

I was able to attend one of the firm's 70 minutes meetings. This time it was regarding mediation in divorce disputes. The 70 minutes meeting was quite a unique idea and shows how well-established this firm is. Not many places have the capacity to host such an event.

An international internship is so unconventional and I'd love to do it all over again. It's an extremely valuable experience. I recommend anyone to be bold and step out of their country and jurisdiction to try something new. You won't regret it.

I will miss this place; as well as the Malaysian food! Thank you to everyone at Thomas Philip for allowing me to enjoy this internship. Hope to visit if I'm in KL again!
